A Sunday's Bike Ride

By Todd Madson, (C) 2003

On Sunday, July 27, 2003 I took a bike ride with Scot Gore and Geardaddy of the roadbikereview discussion forums.

We took an extended trip from Bloomington, Minnesota south to near Chanhassen, Shakopee, Savage, Prior Lake, even nearing Jordan. All told it was about 48 miles if you believe my Vetta bike computer. Or 52 miles if you believe Microsoft.

I had a lot of fun on the ride although the late July sun was brutal and some of the hills the guys had cooked up were particularly difficult to climb (I'm thinking particularly of climbing Highway 13, then the steep hill on McColl to Highway 18, then a fast descent down to Eagle Creek Blvd and later in the ride the long Eden Prairie Road climb).

The funny thing is at the time I was descending Highway 18 my cell goes off.

I was on call for work this weekend (IS/IT at a local brokerage house) and I took the call expecting the worst..

It's the wife calling about tonight's family get together - it's on after all. At the same time I'm watching Scot and GD recede into the distance and had to work a bit to reel them in. Ow.

Other notable things I saw:

-Someones helmet frame (sans styrofoam helmet itself lying at the side of the road.

-A CD or CD-ROM lying by the side of the road.

-Assorted car parts by the side of the road.

-A bunch of skidmarks at one point in the road that went tons of directions. Odd.

-Scot and Geardaddy are pretty quick and GD climbs those hills like a maniac.

-Women in a convertible whooped and hollered at us at one point. This never happened when I was single.

It was great weather for riding despite a stiff headwind when heading west and good company too.

Afterwards we hung out in Scot's sunroom and I had about a liter of water in what seemed to be minutes, Scot had a Dr. Pepper and GD had a beer and some water on the side.

I felt bad I couldn't hang since I had a family gathering to get to but it was fun and I'll definetely want to do it again......once I stop aching, heh.
