This particular ride was of note in that it occurred at the Hidden Valley recreation area in Ely, about 20 miles north of Tower, MN and about two hours north of Duluth, MN.
Hidden Valley is mostly known as a downhill and cross country ski area in the winter. In the summer it's a hiking and mountain biking area.
This particular event was of note because a tiny twig jumped up into my rear derailleur which pretzelled it and actually bent my mountain bike frame.
A moment later we heard gunshots (we shouted "we're not deer") and I had to ride to the parking lot from the top of the hill on momentum alone. Not braking during a ride you have never ridden on before and keeping upright while not having a drivetrain (we couldn't find Todd's chain tool to turn the bike into a singlespeed).
Later, at the Chocolate Moose (the restaurant we ate at after doing this ride) we found out that the hunters we heard were actually shooting bear that was encroaching too close to town.
